The Highland County Homeless Shelter will be participating in “Holiday Mail for Heroes." Our goal is to collect 500 cards to be distributed by the American Red Cross to members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families. Below are the card guidelines and if there are any further questions please contact: Greg Hawkins, Associate Director at 937-393-0634 or send me a message on Facebook. Card Guidelines: Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country. Please observe the following guidelines to ensure a quick reviewing process: •Ensure that all cards are signed. •Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member.” Cards addressed to specific individuals can not be delivered through this program. •Only cards are being accepted. Do not send or include letters. •Do not include email or home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships. •Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process. •Please refrain from choosing cards with glitter or using loose glitter as it can aggravate health issues of ill and injured warriors. •If you are mailing a large quantity of cards, please bundle them and place them in large mailing envelopes or flat rate postal shipping boxes. Each card does not need its own envelope, as envelopes will be removed from all cards before distribution. Over the last five years, the Holiday Mail for Heroes program has collected more than 4 million cards filled with messages of gratitude, encouragement, and holiday greetings from the American public for members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Through our partnership with Pitney Bowes we collect, screen, sort, and distribute holiday cards to American soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, veterans, and military families in communities nationwide and on military installations around the world. If you would like to contribute funds towards purchasing blank cards or to assist with shipping cards, please let us know.
