The IRS and 501(c) Mess -- WARNING -- Political and long. This - TopicsExpress

The IRS and 501(c) Mess -- WARNING -- Political and long. This IRS thing is a great example of the extremes to which our politicians have gone partisan to our Republics detriment. So, of course the IRS has too much power and any organization that large will not only make mistakes but go off track as well. Its not a smoking gun, though, that Obama and his administration at large were conspiring to sabotage the GOP/Tea Party. Is it possible? Yes. The purpose of the investigation should be to follow the evidence. If an honest and thorough investigation, i.e., not a witch hunt, reveals political corruption then by all means make the case and prosecute. The GOP/Tea Party has dominated the narrative and what is lost is that the Supreme Courts Citizen United decision opened the flood gates for the founding of 501(c) (3) and (4) organizations -- thousands of them were started -- overwhelmingly (literally) right-wing. The IRS immediately noted that many of the groups were poorly organized, fiscally and operationally, and not in compliance, acting more like PACs (political action committees) in clear violation of non-profit tax and election laws. Additional red flags were raised when a number of the right-wing 501s were discovered to be led by people who had a history of tax problems. The reason more right-wing 501(c)s were scrutinized was there were many, many more of them. Some liberal 501(c)s were turned down; yes, fewer to be sure, but wouldnt that make sense since there were so many more of right-wing 501(c)s? Also, the IRS was overwhelmed with the workload. Taken on the face of it, shouldnt these 501(c) (3)s and (4)s be investigated? Its a matter of law and the integrity of the election process. Of course they should be heavily scrutinized. Why is it any more likely that the Obama Administration would conspire to subvert the election by influencing the IRS than that the GOP/Tea Party would conspire to subvert the election through illegal 501(c)s? Isnt it possible that the GOP/Tea Party was behind a systematic attempt to subvert the election with a massive 501(c) campaign? Why is Issa not investigating that angle, too? That is rhetorical, of course. Neither scenario is more apparent. The liberals/Democrats are once again weak in their response. Investigate the IRS AND the 501(c)s but focus on the facts, follow the evidence with less energy and focus on speculation. Witch hunts dont result in effective investigations. The situation is, I think, a symptom of our highly and bitterly partisan government and it is disgusting.
