The Illiana Expressway project — a controversial public/private tollway to connect Interstates 55 and 65 in Illinois and Indiana — has been deemed a “boondoggle” by a national research group. A new report by the Public Interest Research Group called “Highway Boondoggles: Wasted Money and America’s Transportation Future” names 11 proposed highways throughout the country that “either address problems that do not exist, or have serious negative impacts on surrounding communities that undercut their value.” It describes the Illiana as a “new privatized toll road proposed primarily to speed freight trucks across the Midwest may instead charge tolls too high to attract trucks, and will likely require hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies.”
