The Illustris project has replaced the millennium simulation as - TopicsExpress

The Illustris project has replaced the millennium simulation as the most detailed model of our universe ever produced. With over an order of magnitude higher resolution, it is capable of detailing our universe down to a scale of roughly 40kpc, and includes a number of properties which have never before been included in cosmological simulations (feedback from supernovae and black holes, gas temperature simulations, and more). As a result, they have produced the correct distribution (ie. it matches what we see) of spiral/elliptical/irregular galaxies in their simulation, something which other models have never been able to do. The first academic publication of results from Illustris was in Nature last week, and the attached video is from the project website/first authors youtube account. For more information on this ultra awesome project, I would strongly recommend checking out illustris-project.org/ and/or reading the paper at arxiv.org/abs/1405.1418
