The Independent (29.03.14) Development of vertical method for fish, vegetable cultivation theindependentbd/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=209630:bau-develops-vertical-method-for-fish-vegetable-cultivation&catid=95:national&Itemid=141 Saturday, 29 March 2014 Author / Source: BAU CORRESPONDENT MYMENSINGH: The Aquaculture Department under Fisheries Faculty of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) developed an innovative and a vertical technique to cultivate fish and vegetable simultaneously. The technique helps cultivate fish and vegetable simultaneously on roof top of house, without using fertiliser and pesticide. On the contrary, cultivating commercially using this technique, farmers could be economically benefited by producing bio-chemical free fish and vegetables also and can fulfill their family demand. Dr. M. A. Salam, Prof. of the Aquaculture Department under Fisheries Faculty of BAU, has developed the method. He said, cultivation of fish in tanks and using the water of the tanks for growing vegetable, without applying bio-fertilizer on the roof top of own residence is easy. The technique is most suitable for salt and draught prone areas of the country as it requires less than 97 percent water to cultivate. Farmers are applying high amount of insecticides, pesticides, quick harvest fertilizers and rapid growing antibiotics, which might cause fatal diseases to human body. A farmer using the technique have to drill 13 to 15 holes in a 4.5 feet long plastic pipe, fill it with coconut fiber to conserve moisture for crops, then seedlings of vegetables like strawberry, lettuce, tomato, cucumber etc can be planted in each drilled part. When the roots penetrate and spread inside the coconut fiber completely, the pipes should be hung vertically. An exhaust pipe should be attached to the bottom of the structure for the supply of water, which will be released into a fish farming tank. Different types of indigenous fishes including tilapia, catfish, pungas and walking fish could be cultivated in the tank. Although no additional fertiliser or soil is used to cultivate the vegetables and fruits, but artificial feed is needed for the fish cultivated in the tank. For this, larva of black soldier fly could be used as the fish feed, which is the favourite food of fish. There are protein, lipid and different minerals in this feed which helps in rapid growth of fish, Dr Salam said. About the new technique, he said dependency on market supply can be reduced by cultivating vegetables and fish on the roof top even in the yard of houses. One can economically benefit as it requires less land and production cost. Meanwhile, many countries in the world have become succeeded by adopting this technique.
