The Individual Mandate under the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare or ACA) kicks in this year. I wanted to explain the exemptions to this tax penalty as this will be an important issue for a lot of people at tax time this year. My personal favorite is the exemption for people who have recently filed bankruptcy. I also wanted to point out that the individual mandate does apply to people with Green Cards, Refugees, Parolees, TPS and a number of other non-citizens, although not to people benefiting from President Obamas Executive Action in creating DACA and DAP. I have read a number of articles and blogs that say that Resident Aliens and other non-citizens are exempt. They are not, although people out of status (so called undocumented workers or illegal aliens) are exempt.
