The Institute of Technology, Tralee and Cork Institute of Technology have moved onto the second stage of their application for designation as a technological university. The next phase of the application looks for details of the merger and planned performance criteria will need to be documented. The final stage will involve an evaluation of these plans by an international expert panel, followed by legal mergers and eventual designation for successful applicants. In response to a parliamentary question from Deputy Tom Fleming, Minister Ruairi Quin said the timeframe for this will depend on the capacity of the institutions to meet those criteria.
