The International Animal Rescue Orangutan Rescue team saved a gorgeous young female orangutan named Rika in late October 2013. The team was called out to the village of Tumbang Titi, a four hour drive from Ketapang, to rescue Rika, who was being kept as a pet. Rika is about three years old and her owners said that they had kept her for three months. However it is suspected that Rika had been kept as a pet for much longer as she is very habituated to humans. Though Rika was kept in a small cage, she also spent time chained by the neck under the house, along with a dog and a pig. She was sometimes let off her chain and would go and make a nest, but she always returned to the house for food. Rika had some wounds on her neck from the chain and a skin infection, but both are now being treated by the medical staff and are healing well. Rika’s hair is in poor condition due to a diet of vegetables and rice, but this will improve now she is being fed more suitable and nutritious food. Rika is now being housed at the IAR Rescue Centre in Ketapang, West Kalimantan. She has a very sweet personality and vocalises for attention. These two photos show a stark contrast between before and after Rika’s rescue. We are so glad that little Rika is now in the safety of the IAR Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. TOP is fully funding the IAR Orangutan Rescue team in 2013-2014 at a cost of $60,000 AUD.
