The International Court of Justice has finally reached a conclusion on Australias case against the Japanese whaling program. Essentially, Australia (with New Zealand intervening) won. The court ruled that Japans program does not constitute scientific research. The Court has ordered that Japan revoke any current whaling permits and not issue any new ones. The full outcome can be read here: icj-cij.org/docket/files/148/18162.pdf I am not jumping for joy just yet. The true outcome will be seen when Japan acts next. Their representatives have said that withdrawing from the IWC and/or recommencing commercial whaling is an option. (Some other countries already use that approach. Im looking at you Iceland and Norway.) At least it is a win for science. There are some standards that cant be twisted for commercial purposes. And this should give some respite to the whales (but not the dolphin slaughters).
