The Internet, which is about to be hijcked by the abusive telecommunications giants, has bestowed many blessings on us in its 25 years. And many insights. One of these insights might readily prompt us to throw up our hands and cry, Is everything about money? Every day, every hour our inboxes fill with the most urgent pleas from incumbents and candidates for office to send money. The sky is falling, send money! The bad guys are winning, send money! They’re about to do this, send money! The markets are going to collapse, send money! It’s endless, and it shoves capitalism in our faces in a way that used to be somewhat escapable, if only for a few days. Utimately, it’s contemptuous, because it negates our personhood and turns us into money machines. The politicians are pushing our levers in expctation we’ll cough up something. But the only thing they’re coughing up is more pleas for more money. The Internet is the instrument of in your-face-capitalism. These days I’m almost delighted to see a cheap $19.99 gewgaw sold on TV, becaue the media are by and large selling things we can’t afford. Cars, Rolexes, diamonds, time shares, etc.
