The Islamic State (ISIS or IS) cant be defeated! Like the war on terror an amorphic idea cant be shot. We can repress it but it will rise again. The reason being that the IS believes it is following the Koran and there will always be supporters at any opportune time in the future to fight on. Will Americans endorse forever stationing troops and using up untold billions? No way. Sooner or later we will declare victory and depart without affecting the long term outcome. There are only three possible outcomes: 1. IS takes over the pre WWI borderless Arab lands as it is doing while slaughtering millions. 2. Dictators take over as before Bushs aryan folly and through brutality suppress all opposition. 3. We go on the present course and affect nothing in the end. Obviously the last is the most palatable and will be pursued without anything close to victory. Reinstalling latter day Saddams is the rational method with least cost but we would have to eat too much crow. So, off we go to more chaos in the mid-east and by extension here in the US.
