The JDRF One Walk is this Saturday, October 25th. Austin was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on October 19, 2011 - 3 years ago yesterday. He was admitted to the hospital on the 19th and we knew only a little more than nothing about type 1 diabetes. On the 20th, when he was released, we were sent home with just enough information about diabetes to keep him safe until we could learn all that we needed to about this incurable disease. Three years later and we are STILL learning. Just last night, after a very intense day of baseball, Austin had a dangerously low blood sugar that took 3 juice boxes, a granola bar and a pack of peanut butter crackers just to get back up to normal. It isn’t only food and carbs that can affect his blood sugar, but stress, exercise, illness, heat, etc. He must check his blood sugar at least 6 times a day, and must count every carb he eats or drinks. He wears an insulin pump which administers insulin to him 24/7, and he doses himself with additional insulin for the carbs he eats or for blood sugar readings that are above the normal range. If his blood sugar is too low, he can feel shaky or hungry or agitated. Then he must have a “fast sugar” like a juice box, non-diet soda, etc., along with some protein to keep it raised. It is a constant balancing act. We seriously considered not having a team this year, or raising funds or even participating in the Walk. To be quite honest, this year it really isn’t convenient for us, but type 1 diabetes isn’t a convenient disease. Austin never gets to take a break from it, he can’t take a day off, he can’t worry about it tomorrow, or next week, or next year instead. So though it is less than a week away from the Walk, here is our plea for you to join us in helping JDRF, who is dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. Walk with us, join our team, make a donation!! If you want to walk, click “join” or if you want to make a donation, click “donate”. If you would rather send a check, make it payable to JDRF and mail it to us: www2.jdrf.org/goto/austinp Kevin and Susanne Poythress 7505 Glenharden Dr. Raleigh, NC 27613 We appreciate your support! Help us turn Type One into Type None. Thank you, The A Team
