The Journey gets a little tougher for the Wadst Family now as they cross the Mississippi River (on the Lincoln Hwy Toll Bridge) and enter Iowa. Journal Entry for Sunday, Jun 17th After having our breakfast of boiled eggs and coffee and rolls we prepared to make a start. We crossed over a long toll bridge over the Mississippi River and saw the excursion boat which travels on this river. After crossing this river we were in Iowa, which state we found out since, is the state of the dirt roads. From then on was the beginning of our troubles with bad roads. From now on for about 300 miles or more we have to traverse over what is called “dry weather” roads. When it rains they are almost impassable and you have to wait until they dry up before venturing further. We traveled all day without any serious trouble until late in the afternoon when we had a blowout. We thought we had two much weight on one side. My brother put on a new tube, and a while after that we made for camp. The camp ground wasn’t a very good one, but as it was the only camp for a good many miles on, we decided to make the best of it, and we were all tired out after the terrible roads. We enjoyed very much our supper of fried eggs, potatoes and tomatoes and bread and coffee. After supper I wrote a letter to my father.
