The K300 Race Committee has decided to penalize K300 Mushers Rohn Buser and Martin Buser by adding ten additional minutes to their respective official finish time. This change was made after both mushers left the marked trail and traveled through Church slough which was not marked and not part of the race trail. Leaving the marked trail resulted in a shorter path at a crucial portion of the race that allowed the mushers gain an unfair competitive advantage over other mushers. The ten minute penalty was calculated by looking at the rate of speed the mushers were traveling form Kwethluk to Bethel and calculating the shorter distance travelled. The K300 Race Committee has also assessed an additional 10% penalty of each mushers prize purse. This results in a $1700 fine for Rohn Buser and a $600 fine for Martin Buser.
