The Keurig coffee system was first marketed in 1990. A significant source of income to the company was a licensing fee it imposed on coffee suppliers like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts when such companies sold their coffee in Keurigs patented pods. In 2012, the patent on the Keurig pods expired. Since then, many unlicensed, private label, Keurig-compatible pods have appeared on the market, often at prices lower than licensed Keurig products, cutting into Keurigs profits. This is how free markets work. Keurig subsequently decided that rather than competing, they would release a new generation of coffee makers. This new generation includes technology that prevents Keurig coffee makers from brewing coffee from unlicensed pods. I really like the convenience and quality of the Keurig system. But I am perfectly willing to throw away the Keurig and go to another system, or just go back to brewing with a decent coffee maker, if these guys are going to be such flaming *ssholes. I already dislike the fact that Keurig coffee pods create so much plastic waste, so it would not take much for me to give up on them entirely. Knock it off, Keurig.
