*The Kiss* ~~ “Stop it, please, I beg of you,” the little girl pleaded, screaming and laughing at the same time. “No I won’t. Not until you stop being angry with me,” the little boy replied, feeling empowered. “It is not fair. And now you are making me angrier. I said DON’T DO IT,” she squealed in delight. “Then it shouldn’t matter since you are already upset with me.” The boy continued his assault. “Stop right now. Ok I forgive you.” The girl managed to catch her breath whilst wrapping her arms around her stomach and still laughing mindlessly. The young boy had used his strength to tickle the little girl on her feet, knowing that it was the only way of getting to her. “See you should have never let me into your secret. It has become my weapon now,” the boy beamed following his conquest. “You play unfair. I hate you,” she said, her words hollow. “No you don’t. I am your best friend. You love me,” the young boy responded without any doubt. The little girl laughed at his arrogance “You may be my best friend but I - don’t - love – you,” she taunted. “Lair Lair pants on fire,” the charming young boy teased. “Shut up. Now listen to me. I will forgive you but on four conditions” The little girl continued in an authoritative tone. One, don’t ever tickle me again. Two, no playing House with us girls again. Three, never ever try kissing me again and Four, never ever mention it to anyone, not a soul.” “But that’s what fathers do to mothers before leaving for work. Since we were playing House and I was the Father, I kissed you before going off.” He was a cheeky monkey. She didn’t have much to say about this. Her response was “And that’s why I don’t want you play with us girls again” The little girl walked away with her head held up high, believing it was she who had finally won the battle. The little boy smiled mischievously looking at his best friend. He doubted whether he could keep his promise. He couldn’t wait to tell all their friends that he had kissed her, even though it was just a little peck on her lips. What a scandal it would be. He knew she would get angry but he also knew that he would make her forget everything and be best friends again. ~~ Tulika woke up to the quite humming of the ceiling fan. It took her a few seconds to adjust her eyes to the darkness around. The sun had just risen. She knew it because she could see the light from the cracks in the curtains. Resetting her senses to the surrounding, Tulika realized she had been dreaming. And it always seemed real, as she remembered that one childhood incident. A smile crossed her puffy face and her thoughts immediately went to her best friend, Neal. Since that afternoon of their summer vacation, Tulika and Neal continued to be inseparable. As kids they competitively enjoyed playing hopscotch and badminton, flying kites, monopoly, chess and later video games too; everything except House. Neal had kept the incident to himself and Tulika was thankful for that. Over the years, the incident was a faint memory, one which Tulika was sure Neal would have completely forgotten. Tulika and Neal grew up together, sharing secrets and grief, helping each other with incomplete assignments and getting over broken hearts. They hated each other’s choice of crushes and love interests but when it came to TV, they both took delight in watching the Wonder Years and later on,That 70s Show together. They fought over trivial issues; they patched up over butterscotch ice-cream cones and with all those ups and downs, one thing remained constant: their friendship. But something had happened last evening and she feared it might change their lives. For good or bad she wasn’t sure. All she knew was she couldn’t lose her friend at any cost. They had been at a friend’s birthday party and as always, they paired up for a jive number. When a slow number kicked in, they easily fitted into each other’s arms; she was relaxed, he was comfortable. Maybe it was Peter Gabriel’s rasping, deep voice bringing them closer or maybe it was Cupid’s aim, because things changed that moment. Tulika sensed his muscle tense. Neal felt the fine hair on the back of her neck tingle at his touch. She looked up to see his face; he was staring into her eyes. Nothing was said, but a lot was conveyed. She arched her neck and he slowly dipped his head. Soon they were close enough to kiss but then he stepped back. She looked hurt, but he was restrained. When Neal finally spoke, with a smile, he said “I am going to break your rule 3 and this time when I kiss you, I won’t be able to keep it a secret.” Tulika looked confused but within minutes, realization dawned. Her heart skipped a beat and she smiled back stupidly at Neal. Even after all these years, he had not forgotten The Kiss, just like she had dreamily held on to it. ~ Jyothi DMello #TAWfanarchy
