The Labour Party in Scotland are very secretive these days about - TopicsExpress

The Labour Party in Scotland are very secretive these days about their membership figures. In fact, theyve kept their membership numbers a secret for 4 years now, 2010 being the most recent year for which figures are publicly available. But Wings Over Scotland last year managed to arrive at an estimate based on their accounts for 2011. The estimate was less than 5,000. If anything, that figure is even lower now given Labours referendum alliance with the Tories and the 30-40% of Labour supporters who voted Yes. But lets be generous and say that Labour membership in Scotland is still around 5,000. In which case, Labour are not only nowhere near to being Scotlands Largest Political Party as they continue to farcically claim, they are in fact not even Scotlands 3RD-largest political party any more. The SNP are obviously top with 82,000 members after their huge membership surge post-referendum. The Scottish Tories are 2nd with approx. 11,000 members. And the Scottish Green Party, whose membership has trebled since last month, now has over 7,000 members. Of course, the 5,000 figure for Labour is just an estimate (although it has to be said, if anything a rather generous one). So if the Labour Party in Scotland finally want to come clean about their actual current membership numbers, they are welcome to do so. But if they insist on carrying on with their secrecy, they cant complain if people draw up estimates instead. So, in the absence of any official figures to the contrary, I am happy to estimate that the Labour Party is now only the 4th-largest political party in Scotland, and smaller than the Scottish Greens. I am also more than happy to state that their continued description of themselves as Scotlands Largest Political Party certainly qualifies them for the title of Scotlands Most-Wilfully-Deluded Political Party. The prestigious Golden Ostrich is ready for them to collect! wingsoverscotland/the-unhappy-few/
