The Lake Placid dugout canoe came into the museums possession in 1961. A few years ago, Jim Blackmore, one of the three men who retrieved the canoe visited the museum. During mid-July of this summer, Curt Stagar of Paul Smiths College retrieved a wood sample that was sent to a lab in Florida to determine the age of the canoe via the Carbon 14 dating process. Yesterday Curt emailed the results, part of which states the following: The SHORT ANSWER: the wood dates to something in the ballpark range of 300-200 years, with a 45% probability of 1669-1780 AD and a 38% probability of 1798-1891AD.
