Agreed! Todays horse show is the goal, not the measurement of progress. I have been criticized for drilling and being hard on pupils. Well, mommies, that is how your children become safe, and stay safe, long after they leave me. I learned from the best and impart their knowledge. I see instructors ride, then when I see their students I ask, why dont I see them reflect their teacher. Ive heard one instructor criticize another by saying, yea but look at her ride. Well, I challenge all instructors who might read this: are your students better than when you got them? Do they progress quickly? Do you challenge them with -no stirrups- no reins - lots of bounces - emergency dismounts - around the world(moving)? All these exercises were taught to me/us in the 60s & 70s.
