The Light of Allah The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “If the Quran is kept within the skin, burning fire will not go near it, nor touch it.” [Ihya Ulum-Id-Deen] This Hadith informs us that remaining safe from the fire of Hell is one of the virtues of memorizing the Quran. While there are many fantastic benefits of memorizing the Quran this guarantee alone is reason enough for a youth to devote a couple of years of his life to memorizing the Quran. Once the Quran has been memorized daily recitation of it will retain it. Note that the Hadith mentions “within skin.” That means that it needs to be in the memory of the Hafidh at all times. Unfortunately, some people memorize the Quran and then forget it. Once it has been forgotten the person is not a Hafidh (preserver of the Quran). Why is it that we are caused to forget the Quran or Hadith? If you sense a deficiency in your ability to memorize or retain the Quran or Hadith consider the words of Imam Shafi’s teacher, the famous scholar Wakee bin al-Jarraah. His instructions were to abandon sin. He said that knowledge is a light. And the light of Allah is not granted to a sinner.
