The Limits of Darkness John 1:4-5 - Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it. One of the powerful things about light is that it always wins in the battle versus darkness. Walk outside on an incredibly dark, but uncloudy, evening and you can experience what I’m talking about! Light one candle in a house where the power is out and see how far reaching the effects are! Jesus came into a very dark world – we know this but often forget it. In our world where perversion seems to be the norm and sin seems to surround us, we fail to recall how evil the world was before Christ’s entrance. And, consider what happened to Jesus as well. He loved, helped and healed many. He challenged and encouraged with His words. What did He gain for that effort – a criminal’s cross! At that point, it does not appear that John’s description of Him – as possessing life and light – proved true. But, it was through the suffering and death that Jesus gained the greatest victory. It was through His darkest hour that the light burst forth the brightest! Not only did God bring truth to light through this circumstance, that same light continues to shatter darkness today! Whatever darkness you face, whether in your circumstances or in your own struggles, pause for a moment and realize that God’s source of light and life is truly inexhaustible. He may not change your circumstances – but He promises that, ultimately, the darkness will not overcome!
