The Liquidity Trap - Larry Berman, CFA, CMT, CTA - Nov 30, 2014 The fiscal stimulus introduced to combat the 2008/2009 financial crisis has propelled markets to all-time highs – rewarding equity investors and pushing everyone in need of income to take on more equity risk. Now, as 2015 approaches this stimulus is starting to be withdrawn, and the pace appears set to accelerate in the New Year. Will 2015 bring the first of the interest rate increases too? Although no one really knows what will happen, one distinct possibility is a “liquidity trap” – a scenario that has kept rates and economic growth near rock-bottom levels in Japan for 25 years.
