The Lord tells us to “avoid greed in all its forms.” To emphasize this point, he relates the parable of the rich fool in today’s Gospel. The rich fool was not content with enough; he felt compelled to amass more and more wealth so that he could “take life easy, eat, drink, and enjoy” himself for “many years.” But “God said to him, you fool! This very night you will have to give up your life.” And, the Lord concluded, “this is how it is with those who pile up riches for themselves but are not rich in God’s sight.” The parable of the rich fool addresses the major problem in today’s society; that is, the problem of greed which has brought our economic system to its knees. Let us strive to be rich in God’s sight, not man’s.
