"The Man Who Planted Trees" was written by Jean Giono, a writer who returned from fighting in WWI dedicated to opposing war and uncontrolled urbanization. Through the story of Elzeard Bouffier, a man who alone restored a barren wasteland to a lush, forested countryside with a thriving village, Giono inspires the pursuit of joy in harmony with nature. In the story, Bouffier plants thousands and thousands of trees by hand. “To properly appreciate this man’s extraordinary qualities,” Giono writes, “it must be remembered that he lived and worked in solitude; solitude so complete that towards the end of his life he lost the habit of speech. Or was it that he saw no need for it?” The original film and book versions are treasures. They are hard to find, but worth the seeking. [Paperback book, 1995: Stoddart Publishing Co.
