The Mayor’s Civic Dinner will be free for councillors and guests once again – with council taxpayers picking up the tab. The incoming Mayor of Kirklees, Labour’s Clr Ken Smith, will host the event on June 4 and has decided to make it free for all invited guests. It comes after the current Mayor, Tory Martyn Bolt, introduced a £25 charge last year to offset the £5,000-plus cost, saying the dinner should not trouble the public purse.
