The Mediterranean Diet - Dr. Andrew Weil The Mediterranean diet is a composite of the traditional cuisines of Spain, Italy, Greece, Crete, and parts of the Middle East. It consists of high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, unrefined cereals, olive oil, fermented dairy products such as yogurt and natural cheese, and fresh fish as daily staples. The diet doesnt eliminate red meat but limits it to about one meal a month; similarly, poultry, eggs, and sweets are included but are not daily fare. Instead, they are eaten about once a week. Moderate amounts of wine are part of the diet. Research has shown that people who eat a Mediterranean-style diet have a 33% reduction in the risk of death from heart disease, and a cancer death rate that is 24% lower than that of those who eat more Western-style diets. Other research has shown that the Mediterranean diet works better than a low-fat diet to eliminate metabolic syndrome - a combination of obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar that raises the risk of heart disease. My Take - ( Dr. Weil ) Ive long been a proponent of the Mediterranean diet, which is part of a cultural package that includes regular physical activity and strong social and family bonds. Ive found the Mediterranean diet to be an ideal complement to the traditional Japanese diet, which consists of regular servings of fish and whole soy foods, rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, fermented foods like miso and tempeh, and very little meat. I drew from both of these traditional diets to create my Anti-Inflammatory Diet Pyramid, which combines the healthiest ingredients and eating practices from each.
