The Mediterranean diet has long been known to be beneficial to ones health. People who eat a diet high in fruits, nuts, vegetables, olive oil, and fish but low in dairy, meat, and poultry tend to have lower blood pressure, lower rates of heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, Parkinsons and Alzheimers diseases. A new study by the BMJ, one of the world’s oldest peer-reviewed medical journals, looked at more than 4600 women for more than 35 years. Their conclusion was that those who ate a typical Mediterranean diet had longer telomeres. The telomere is a great indicator of how long you will live; longer telomeres=longer life. Telomeres help protect your DNA’s integrity. As we age the telomeres tend to shorten. This study shows that you can actually LENGTHEN your telomeres by adhering to this diet. Luckily this diet has also been shown to be very tasty! bmj/content/349/bmj.g6674
