The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The Hour will not begin until you fight a people whose shoes are made of hair, and the Hour will not begin until you fight a people with small eyes and flat, short noses.” [Sahih Muslim] This hadith was a prediction of the coming of the Mongols who wreaked great devastation in Asia. “The signs of the imminence of the Day of Judgement are of three types: (1) the ‘distant’ signs – those that manifested themselves in the time of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) or sometime after, but long before today, and there is comparatively greater time between them and the Day of Judgement. (2) The ‘intermediate’ signs – those signs that have appeared but have not reached their peak. When all of these have appeared then the third type of signs will begin to appear. (3) The ‘near’ signs – these signs will occur right before the Day of Judgement. They will occur very quickly one after another and when all of these have occurred, then Qiyamat will suddenly happen at any moment. “The first and third types of signs, the distant and near ones, are events that will occur in the universe, while the second type of signs, the intermediate ones, have to do with human deeds. “For example, in the first (distant) type are signs such as the coming of the last Messenger and his death, the incidence of the splitting of the moon, the tribulation of the Mongols, etc. “The second (intermediate) type of signs consists of sins and bad deeds that people will commit to the extent that Halal and Haram have no meaning for them anymore. Evil will become so prevalent that music will be heard even in Masajid and Madaris (in the form of ring tones of mobile phones and music played outside). These are a little over seventy sins that are mentioned in detail in ahadith. “The third (near) signs are strange phenomena unfolding in nature, such as the descent of Eesa (alaihis salam), the rising of the sun from the west, the emergence of the beast that will speak, etc. These signs are ten in number; five occur before the descent of Eesa (alaihis salam) and five occur after his descent. These last five are also known as ‘Alamaat Kubra’ (the biggest signs) or ‘Alamaat Qurba’ (the nearest signs). After these last five have occurred Qiyamat should be expected as the birth of a baby camel in the last day of its mother’s pregnancy, i.e., any time! Till the first of these last five signs occur good will prevail on earth, but during these last five, evil will increase till it overwhelms all good. Finally, all people, whether doers of good or evil, will be presented for their final reckoning.” [Dajjal: Kon, Kab, Kahan, by Mufti Abu Lubabah Shah Mansoor]
