The Methodist Devotional RIGHTEOUS GOVERNMENT AND CITIZENS Wednesday Oct. 15, 2014 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people(Pro 14:34) Righteousness as a nature of God is a gift that is inherited and not earned, so no one can be righteous outside God (Rom 5:17; 2 Cor 5:21; 1Peter 2:24). It is obtained by putting ones faith in Jesus Christ. The gift of righteousness is imputed on the believer. Having inherited it, the believer then can live a righteous life. Our text is that righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people (Pro 14:34). This means, when the citizens of a nation are righteous, that nation becomes great. When the leaders are right with God, they are given divine wisdom and insight to govern the citizenry in such a way that the standard of living becomes high. There would be good health care and therefore the mortality rate would be low. There will be good education to drive economical growth with its attendant infrastructure developments. Eventually, there would be jobs for citizens; they would also work hard and pay taxes. Is that what we see in our nation? Righteous government would put in place good laws and also would enforce it. This would make commitment to crime unattractive and eventually crime would be reduced. The type of leadership in any nation, is the reflection of the moral state of the citizenry. If the citizens are righteous the leadership would be righteous and if they are bad the leadership would be bad. If we want to see righteous government, then we must first look at our own lives. We have to first believe in Jesus to inherit righteousness. Having inherited divine righteousness, we also have the responsibility to live right in all endeavors. It starts from our home, continues to the church, our work places and the market places. As God’s chosen and holy people, we are admonished to put to death bad habits (Col 3:5-9), but exhibit right living (Col 3:12-14). This is what would make our nation great. Amen. Prayer Heavenly Father, I thank you for the gift of righteousness. Help me, Holy Spirit, to live right everywhere I find myself, in Jesus name. Amen.
