The Midnight Sermon: Make up your mind to get to the top... no matter what. We hiked the Y as a family today. Its a mile long hike with 10 switchbacks. I had a specific talk with my sons about what it was going to take. I told them Make up your mind that we are going to the top NO MATTER WHAT. I asked them what that meant and they said even if we get tired we wont stop and quit. The mere fact that THEY TOLD ME was the commitment from them. My 4 year old wanted to quit. He cried. He sat down on the trail. He asked me to carry him. He complained. Each time he faced the opposition I gently reminded him remember what we committed to in the car son? I would let him answer. With his head down he would say yes daddy. Were going to the _________, no matter what. He would fill in the blank top. Your business, marriage, health... your life is like this. As long as you make up your mind before you start that youre going to the top... youll make it. Im committed to go to the top. Im committed to my marriage... no matter what. Im committed to mastering my craft... no matter what. I wont quit no matter how hard, discouraging and difficult the road gets. We arrived at the top and to see the smile on my sons face was deeply satisfying. As we arrived at the Provo Rec Center to swim later in the day I said happily Look son, the Y that we just came off of. Izrael had a look of joy and shouted, We did it daddy. I did it.
