The Military The military, according to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary. Is all armed forces. The military primarily is charged with the responsibility to protect and defend the integrity of the nation (land, sea and air space) against any external attack. The nigerian military performs this noble task through its major divisions namely; The Nigerian Army......protecting the land. The Nigerian Navy......protecting the sea/costal areas. The Nigerian Air Force......protecting the air space. In general terms, a military officer is one who is authorized by the Nigerian constitution and an act of Defense Council, and approved by the Commander in chief of the Armed Forces of the federal Republic of Nigeria to assume a certain rank as will be stated in the terms and conditions (officers) of the Nigerian armed forces. The types of commission are in different categories; A) Regular commission;- this is achieved after going through the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) fort 5years. On successful completion, of the course the person is then commissioned. The person must be between the ages of 17 and 22years. B) short service commission;- this takes 9 months intensive training before the commissioning. Entry requirement is a university degree or HND. And the person must be between the ages of 22 and 25years. C)direct short service commission;- this is for a period of 6 months and it is designed to commission professionals like Doctor, nurses and engineers to complement the shorfalls that are experienced from time to time in the military. There are also regular combatant commission. These are fighting arms of the military (teeth arm) and are responsible to actually fight to defend the nation. They are grouped into five categories and each has a specific task. And role on the battlefield. these groups are; The infantry The armour The artilley Engineers Signals. Entry Requirements The prospective Nigerian military officer should have an Olevel. Certificate with five credit passes which must include English, Mathematics, and any other three subjects related to the intending course of study in the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) in addition he must be -a citizen of Nigeria -between the ages of 17 and 22years -certified medically fit The candidate is expected to purchase a form, fill and indicate the division of the military he/she wishes to join (army,navy,air force), sit for the entrance exam. There after attend a selection interview. If he is successful he undergoes the five (5) years academic and military training at the Nigerian Defense Academy, and will be commissioned on successful completion of the course. So God Help Us!
