The Min show great bouncebackability Coundon Cosmos 1 – Minstrel Boy 4 G.Smith W.Edwards (2) A. Reeve (Pen) Minstrel Boy returned to one of their former homes – Coundon Park Pitch 4. After a poor opening day defeat vs Willenhall Wanderers, The Min were keen to get back to winning ways. Abbott decided to change from the traditional 4-4-2 in favour of 3-5-2 (with wingbacks). Captain Adam Fellows returned to the starting line-up and played alongside Adam Buzzard and Stephen Quinney. Jamie Rollason and Adam McNaney operated at wingbacks. The Min had a midfield three of Adam Reeve, Jack Foster and Will Edwards, the latter of which was returning to a more familiar role. Greg Smith and Jonny Lee were upfront. The new formation worked from the off. Throughout the first (second half) The Min played with a lot of confidence and possession. There was some good play on the deck, with quality one touch passes, even some flicks and back-heels too. The Min also mixed up the play also, with some balls over the top which gave the team a ‘Plan A and Plan B’. It was a direct ball from ‘keeper Chris Wickes that Greg Smith got onto the end of and slotted the ball into the back of the net with a good finish. The back 3 were there when needed, strong as a unit. Buzzard even made a few ‘Big Mo’ style runs into the Cosmos’ half. The midfield 3 equally worked hard, Adam Reeve with his strict instructions of defensive work only. Jack Foster linking up the play well and pressing the opposition whenever they had the ball, and finally Will Edwards getting the ball down often and linking up with Greg Smith and Jonny Lee upfront. It was Edwards who scored The Min’s second and third goal, one of which was a header from a knock down via a corner. He also clipped the crossbar from a 40 yard lobbed shot, very close to getting a quality goal. The Cosmos did get one goal back, after a Cosmos player wasn’t closed down fully and was able to blast a shot in from outside the box, with Wickes very close to getting hands on it. After a great piece of attacking play down the left side of the pitch, Edwards got onto a through-ball into the box and was completely taken out, with the Cosmos player getting all player and no ball. Unfortunately the foul was so bad, Edwards was unable to take the pen for his hat-trick, or even continue on the pitch. Never one to miss a trick and get himself a ‘did you see my goal?’ opportunity, Adam Reeve stepped up and put the ball into the corner of the net to put Minstrel Boy 4-1 up. Not long after the final whistle blew, and Minstrel Boy were back in business with 3 points. It was a great team performance, great football played, great effort. It was pleasing to watch.
