The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has shut down a Riyadh leather factory for manufacturing counterfeit luxury leather products. Al-Ahli Leather Factory, operated by a foreign investor, was found making leather products with “Made in Italy” stamps to increase its sales, the ministry stated on its website. The Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) tweeted on Monday that the factory was also operating without a license after its foreign investment contract expired, citing some health violations. The 27-year-old factory used to receive animal skin, mainly sheep, from local slaughterhouses, with a daily production capacity of 18,000 skins. It manufactured mainly shoes, bags, wallets, and other leather products. The ministry said the public should inform it of bogus business operations on the toll free number 8001241616. The public has welcomed the government’s recent crackdown on violating businesses. “The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has regained public confidence, sending a strong message to the government that it only takes the right man in the right place to make things work,” tweeted columnist Khaled Al-Sulaiman.
