The Missouri National Guard has released a special episode of “MO Guard TV” commemorating the response to the devastating tornado that hit southwest Missouri on May 22, 2011. The fourth episode of the Guard’s monthly, half-hour television program tells the story of the National Guard’s involvement in the area from the night of the tornado through its current relationship with the area, said Maj. Gen. Steve Danner, adjutant general of the Missouri National Guard. “In the years since the tornado, the Missouri National Guard has maintained a solid relationship with the people of southwest Missouri,” Danner said. “We were proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they rebuilt their homes and community. We remain awed by their resilience.” Gov. Jay Nixon mobilized the Missouri National Guard immediately after the tornado. In the weeks after, the Guard’s role evolved from search and rescue, traffic control and other support missions to include providing state oversight for the federal debris removal program and overseeing Nixon’s Disaster Recovery Jobs Program. The Missouri National Guard is a robust force made up of more than 11,500 Soldiers and Airmen. Since 2001, Missouri Guardsmen have supported more than 18,000 overseas deployments, and in the past 10 years more than 10,000 Guardsmen have mobilized for state emergency missions, Danner said. dvidshub.net/r/vvbued
