Mod Squads Woody - The nickname of a rundown 1951 Mercury station wagon driven by a group of three hippie cops (one black, one white, one blond) on the police drama The Mod Squad (ABC/1968-73). It went to that big junkyard-in-the-sky during the second season when it was driven off a cliff. On the show, Pete Cochran drives a 1951 Mercury Woody station wagon. This wagon is powered by a 255 Flathead V8, This engine was rated at 112 horsepower in 1951, but it didn’t take long for speed shops to release hop-up parts to squeeze out a little more. Petes beloved Woody, which gets destroyed in a season 2 episode The Death of Wild Bill Hannachek, the beloved Woody and its death scene (its brakes go out during a chase scene). The Squad stands and watches their old buddy burn. Linc has a classic line good bye olde paint. During the Reunion movie in 1979, Pete is rich so he buys a Woody when the three of them unite for the task of finding the bad guy. Issued in 1970, The Mod Squads 1951 Mercury Woodie Station Wagon was one of the most expensive kits Aurora ever attempted, requiring five molds. When the show was not a tremendous hit the first season, Aurora decide to hold issuing the kit until the second season was confirmed. Ironically, the kit hit the stores just in time for viewers to see the TV car drive over a cliff in the season opener!
