The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs returned home on Saturday to Veteran’s Memorial Park for its Perfect Game Collegiate League (PGCBL) matchup against a familiar foe, the Amsterdam Mohawks. Both teams were hungry for a win as they both come off losses the prior evening with the DiamondDawgs losing to the Watertown Rams 12-7 and Amsterdam dropping a close one to the Glens Falls Golden Eagles 4-3. Keegan Long (Saint Joseph’s) took his 2-0 record to the mound while Dylan Dwyer (Kentucky) was looking to improve on his 2-1 record and the Dawgs jumped out early to pick up a 9-3 win. The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs got on the board quickly in the first inning when Landon Thibodeaux (LSU Eunice) stole second base and the Mohawks catcher Mark Brennan (Marist) attempted to first throw to second but instead threw to third which ended up in left field and scored Dalton Herrington (ULM) and the Dawgs took a 1-0 advantage. The Dawgs added a few more runs in the bottom half of the third when Sam Dexter (Southern Maine) reached on interference and Jordan Friend (Alabama A&M) walked but both took off on a double steal putting runners at second and third for Dalton Herrington (ULM) who singled in the runs giving the Dawgs a 3-0 lead. The Mohawks got on the board in the top of the sixth when Shane Zimmer (Canisius) doubled and Josh Gardiner (Radford) singled but the inning ended when Ed Charlton (NJIT) was robbed of a single by Dalton Herrington (ULM) as he made a spectacular diving catch in centerfield. The Mohawks added one more in the seventh when Kyle Barrett (Kentucky) singled and the scored on a John Sansone (Florida St) double to cut the lead to 3-2. The DiamondDawgs piled on the runs in he seventh inning when Matt Zanotta (Bryant) singled, Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) reached on an error, then Sam Dexter (Southern Maine) walked and Jordan Serena (Columbia) doubled taking a 5-2 lead. The game broke open when Jordan Friend (Alabama A&M) walked and Dalton Herrington (ULM) blasted a 3-run homerun giving Mohawk Valley 8-2 lead. The Mohawks would add just one more run and the Dawgs would do the same in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Zanotta and take a commanding 9-2 lead. With the win Keegan Long improves to 3-0 while Dylan Dwyer picks up the loss dropping to 2-2 on the season. Keegan Long (Saint Joseph’s) went 6.2 innings, with 8 hits and 6 strikeouts while Dylan Dwyer (Kentucky) pitched 5 innings giving up 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. Offensively for the DiamondDawgs Jordan Serena (Columbia) was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI; Dalton Herrington (ULM) was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and a HR; Landon Thibodeaux (LSU Eunice) was 3-for-4 with a double; Joey Tracey (UAlbany) and Matt Zanotta (Bryant) singled. For Amsterdam Kyle Barrett (Kentucky) was 3-for-5 and John Sansone (Florida St) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. The DiamondDawgs are back at Veterans Memorial Park Tuesday, July 9, 2013 for a 7:05pm contest against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles.
