The Moms’ Network partner’s with National Non-Profit Start School Later, Inc. The Moms’ Network of Walla Walla has joined the national movement of promoting health, safety and equity in education with Star School Later, a nonprofit comprised of health professionals, sleep scientists, educators, parents, students and other concerned citizen working to ensure that all schools can set hours compatible teen sleep patterns. “Over the past 3 years I have heard Dr. Richard Simon Walla Walla’s Sleep Medicine Expert discuss the sleep patterns in the teen brain. Our teens are not getting enough sleep and he uses facts to show it leads to problems in school and socially. It also makes them more vulnerable to depression, obesity and other health problems” states President of the Moms’ Network Beth Swanson. “By joining forces with Start School Later the Moms’ Network has a proven platform to assist us in getting the information out to our local schools administrators about why a later start time in middle school and high school is imperative to the success of our children.” This month the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has also announced a new policy recommending that middle and high schools should begin no earlier than 8:30am to allow teenagers to get enough sleep. This recommendation by the nation’s leading group of pediatricians is affirmation that sleep and school hours are a huge, but fixable, public health problem. By changing school start times schools are putting the health and the well-being of students first and it is a cost0-effective way to address this public health issue. “College Place Schools has taken a huge step forward in this process by having a late start on Friday’s this school year” states Beth Swanson. “We hope to encourage our other schools to look at this important subject concerning our children’s health.” The Moms’ Network will be providing school administrators with factual material to get the dialogue started about changing the school start times in Walla Walla. The Moms’ Network has also invited Dr. Richard Simon to speak at the local middle schools this school year to educate parents on teen sleep patterns and how we can help our teens succeed.
