The #MondayNightWar. Quite literally a ratings battle to the death involving WWE and WCW throughout the 1990s. Innovation and creation lead to the symbolic era that people had within them back then: Rebellion. The Hart of War. Everyone who takes this industry with passion and responsible direction all look at Bret Hart as one of the best, if not one of the most envied individuals to be betrayed by his own company. Youth movements are the logical next step to answering critics, and the upcoming stars of the 90s embodied hard work for their fans. No one couldve imagined the legitimate rivalry that transcended keyfab between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. Bret was more traditional in values, while Shawns personal demons appeared in his life professionally and personally. When the Attitude Era launched in 1997, Shawn embodied that brass arrogance and counterculture attitude the college demographic connected with. Vince found guys like Shawn was their prototype. With Bret refusing to take part in the Attitude Era and falling out with Vince McMahon, it lead to one of the industries most infamous nights: The Montreal Screwjob. The night where Vince and Shawn in cohesion stripped Bret Hart of the WWE Championship mid-match with a false finish in front of Brets hometown crowd of Montreal, Canada. The entire country erupted in an international incident that had serious legal repercussions. The WWE unceremoniously dumped Bret Hart from the company and damaged the mans career and personal life beyond repair. Not only did that show WWE was fully committed to its Attitude Era campaign, but displayed the means they went to compete with WCW by disposing arguably one of their top tier talent in Bret Hart. They made his misery an example to strengthen the Attitude Era. It was quite the wound to him that hed never recover from, and even after his reconciliation back in 2010, its only healed so far. In many ways, I can relate to what Bret has endured in my own empathy. The disfranchisement he was branded overnight. He gave his company chicken salad from the golden goose to work with, and he watched them turn it into chicken s***.
