The Morning Report 6/8/14 Another great day has past and another is beginning. Today is the first day of the rest of your life; are you going to do something with it? I am; I’m going to load the sprayer with the herbicide that I didn’t do yesterday and maybe even go spray where it needs to be sprayed. I didn’t get to it yesterday because after doing all the normal chores and the picking the garden; I was pretty hot and my back hurt, so I decided that I needed to go to Tractor Supply and get some feed and check on prices of some other stuff so that pretty well did the day in by the time the feed and minerals were unloaded; it was after lunch and Alvin needed a nap so I helped him out. I didn’t get as many beans from the garden as last week but we still got quite a few. Kathy thinks there will be about 4 quarts to be canned. We are also accumulating a good number of zucchinis and a few yellow squash. There was also another patty pan picked along with some cherry tomatoes and some banana peppers and cucumbers. The garden isn’t very big but it does produce quite a bit of vegetables and they are good eating. I did notice a couple of stink bugs out there and will have to mix up some dawn detergent solution and hopefully get rid of them before the tomatoes really start producing. There doesn’t seem to be as many tomatoes as I would have thought on those plants but there is some and hopefully there will be quite a few in a couple of weeks. The guavas are doing great and it looks like most of them right now are about the diameter of a quarter and very green. I’m hoping that I’ll know when they are ready to pick; it has been a long time since I picked any guavas. From what I remember, they turn a different color and get a little soft; I hope that I’m remembering correctly because I am looking forward to Kathy’s guava jelly. My mind is still working on a “greenhouse” to cover these guavas during the winter because I would like them to survive our winters. I know how I’m going to heat it and that will be with the irrigation, I believe that the water temperature will keep the house above the temperature that would allow the plants to freeze. My thoughts right now are some kind of frame that can be covered with a heavy plastic and on the warm days the sides can be rolled up to allow the fresh air in and some of the heat out. This might also be a spot where I can put the tower garden that have tender vegetables in, like tomatoes. We do like having fresh tomatoes year around and those tower garden really do work. The worst thing about them as near as I can figure besides the costs is that the right kind of tomato will live indefinitely and it will take up a lot of room. I know that these towers need to be cleaned out periodically and ours usually have plants in them that are still bearing and I hate to destroy producing plants. We are looking for another one or two that people have bought and have quit using and want to get rid of. I know that I can clean these up and have different ones to have a continuing process of raising and eating vegetables year around. Glen is still like his namesake (and you know who you are). He is always hungry and really only wants the bottle. He still hasn’t got to where he is eating the calf manna except when we give it to him by hand but today we are either going to put some Karo syrup or honey on it to see if that won’t entice him to start eating it without having to hand feed him. When we (or just me) walk down there, he is ready for the bottle and empties it in just a few minutes. I really think that he has grown some from when we first penned him and would like to see him grow even more. Grayson has decided that he may not be a bad thing and comes into the paddock in the evening feeding time and goes to eating his dinner. He has improved so much from when we first got him. Back then he really didn’t want to be touched and now he seems to like it or at least tolerates without flinching. He is coming up to me in the field when I’m in the gator and letting me give him treats. Of course Eeyore is also but he doesn’t let me touch him. Mathew will let me walk up to him but won’t walk over to me but we are working on that. Y’all have a great and wonderful day and remember to take a moment to smell the roses!
