The Morning Report 6/9/14 It is another great day beginning what happened yesterday cannot be changed and today is a new beginning. It seems when I try to make plans for accomplishing something, things just don’t work out. It doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a good day or that I didn’t get anything done; it just wasn’t what I had planned to do. Oh well; that is the joys of retirement; I can put it off for another day and do it then. Yesterday the normal chores were done of letting the chickens out, feeding the cranes, feeding Glen and then checking on the cows. I still look for evidence of where that other bull might be each and every time I look at the cows. I check the herd thoroughly in hopes of seeing him in there with the rest and yesterday was no different. I checked the herd and was riding back to the house when I caught a whiff of an odor that might have been something dead. I had noticed some dead vines in the trees in the bay head north of the house. This bay head is a low place that is extremely wet and muddy even when it is dry. It is almost impossible to get through and you can’t drive a piece of equipment through there without being stuck quickly. I turned around and tried to find the smell again with no luck and started driving around the bay head. I drove up as close as I could to the area where the dead vines were and got out of the gator and proceeded to walk in there a bit (as far as I could without sinking). Lo and behold I looked through the bushes and vines and what did I see but the missing bull. He was standing on a dry spot and had eaten everything around him in about a 20 to 30 foot area. I spoke to him and he looked at me like I was crazy and I knew that he couldn’t find his way out of where he was. I also knew that I did not want to venture down in the area without somebody being there in case I got hurt. I went to the house and got Kathy and we loaded some feed in a bucket and some hay that was for Glen and headed back down there. Kathy was unable to see him and thought that I might be hallucinating I think, but I headed in to where he was. I made it about 10 feet when my feet sank to my knees in the mud and of course I fell. Now I have quite a bit of mud on me and with Kathy’s help, we found a different way in there. Kathy still hasn’t seen the bull. I started throwing some feed at him because I really didn’t want to try to wade through there and not have him come to me. He saw the feed and the bucket and with a lot of convincing he started at me; one step at the time. He finally came out of the bay head and onto dry land and really stated eating anything green plus the hay and feed we had taken him. We left him there for a couple of hours and I went back to him with more feed and hay to try to convince him to come up to an open field. He wasn’t going to do that without really crowding him and I did not want to do that so I left him with more feed and hay. After several hours, I went back to check on him and he had moved underneath some oak trees in a small pasture buy Dawn’s but I didn’t really want him in that one because of no water. I tried to convince him to follow me in the hay field that is there and with the help of another cow, I was able to get him in that hayfield that has grass and water. I then was able to get the cow out of there so he is by his self in the field. Now I will feed him grain and get him back healthy. What we believe has happened was that our other bull whipped him pretty good and he headed to this bay head to heal up and get away from that bull. After getting healed up or over the bruising, he just couldn’t figure his way out of the place. The place he was in was surrounded by high bushes and vines and looked impenetrable and I guess that he figured that there was no way out or he did not want to meet up with the other bull. Now he has been located and I know what happened with him and I feel a lot better. I didn’t get done what I wanted to but that is okay, it will get done sooner or later. Y’all have a great and wonderful day and remember to take a moment to smell the roses!
