The Mutts have lost a brother this weekend. We first met Dane Mackelprang about 2 years ago when we kicked off the Miracle Mutts program at The Mission at Kern County. I will never forget the first time I met him: I had Trooper (large pit bull) with me and Dane couldnt resist, despite having been attacked by a pit a few years before, resulting in a gnarly scar on his leg. He said he was apprehensive but not scared and so we took a walk with Troop and then we played a game of hoops with a half flat basketball. Dane had a huge smile, capable of turning around a bad day. He was a man of God, a loving friend and a genuinely good human being. He wrote me Happy birthday, my brother on the 15th and my response was Thanks, Dude. Wish I would have told him how wonderful I thought he was. No regrets, but a simple reminder to take time, whenever we can afford it (and especially when we cant), to say I love you or I care about you. We are all deserving of such words and, whether we are saying or receiving, each reap the benefit. Please honor Dane by viewing this video of He and Delbert at the mission, as featured by ABC23.
