The NASA mind and the loose mind in the USA... Ive thought a lot the past few months about two distinctly different minds that grow in the US. There is my mind: divergent, creative, critical, abstract and esoteric.. And then there is what I have been calling in my thoughts the NASA mind. Science. The NASA mind fits perfectly with the US puritan work ethic and the idea of empire and American exceptionalism. The first mind, the loose mind, is anti-authoritarian. The second mind is authoritarian, patriarchal, belief in will to power and rationalizing the horrific. The second mind is the mind of the green lawn and the American shopping mall. I have been thinking of how the second mind has little respect for the first. The NASA mind dovetails perfectly with American predatory self-interest. In this kind of world, the USA, the NASA mind gets solid employment while the loose mind has to tangle with a hostile world. What is it about scientists that makes them so certain they are allowed to act like gods? American society reifies this idea. We pay the tuition of science based grad students whose work benefits corporate America and the military industrial complex, while forcing artists who go on to higher education into deep debt. The NASA mind can survey the scene and falsely conclude their particular brand of intelligence is the only important kind.
