The Naenae College first fifteen has suffered a set back, after enjoying a record breaking season on the rugby paddock. Naenae finished in the top four in Premier One, their best effort in 60 years and a mighty effort considering the huge resources some schools pour into rugby. Next season, Naenae will be involved in the Hurricanes pre-season tournament with travel to Gisborne and Palmerston North. Their first fundraising opportunity has come to a halt after firewood was stolen from the school. A large tree on the school’s fenceline on Daysh Street was cut down with the intention of selling the firewood. While the tree was being cut people climbed over the fence and filled up their vehicles. One of the vehicles was a truck and when asked not to take it, the driver falsely claimed he had permission from the principal. The boys moved the wood away from the fenceline, but that was also stolen and the team lost $1,500. The theft left sports co-ordinator Yvonne Manual angry and frustrated. Unlike most of the schools they play, Naenae does not have a budget for rugby and she says the theft sends all the wrong messages to the boys who have worked really hard to succeed. Before the boys even think about playing away games, they have to raise the money. Earlier in the year, they beat Marlborough Boys High, who have a budget for travel of $25,000. Naenae raised funds for the trip by holding a hangi. First fifteen captain Willie Tufui, who dreams of playing professional rugby, says the theft was a set-back for the team and raising money is hard work. ‘‘It hurt the team a bit because it is an opportunity for us to travel next year and play one of the best schools in the North Island.’’ ■ If anyone can help ring Yvonne Manual on 027 2035613.
