The Nashville Community Consolidated School District #49 Board of Education met last night. First they heard from Nashville Mayor Raymond Kohlweier about support for the renewal of the Nashville – Washington County Enterprise Zone. This was the same presentation that he gave Monday night to the Nashville High School Board of Education. The NCCSD Board went ahead and voted in favor to support the Enterprise Zone and will put a letter of support together for the Mayor. The Strategic Planning Team was still gathering information and will give a presentation on student growth next month. Superintendent Mike Brink told the Board the Fiscal Year 2014 full 3-year compliance probe report came back. He says it went very well and there were no areas of non-compliance and the school was recognized as full recognition. There was one discrepancy though, that the handbook had Mrs. Schuette listed as the complaint manager, but it is officially Mrs. Kuhl. Brink asked the Board to approve himself and Mrs. Kuhl as the complaint managers, as there needs to be one of each gender. The Board passed this request. He then told the Board about the Special Education and At Risk programs. The At-Risk program for pre-school allows for 20 students per section or class, so they have 3 sections with 51 students and 1 to begin. The special ed for the early childhood has 10 slots available and currently 9 students, while there are 75 or 75 students receiving speech therapy. He says the idea is to get the children in these programs early to get them the help early to allow for better student success as they grow. These numbers are lower than previous years. Due to the weather and possibility of needing to go to school longer, the Board agreed to have 8th grade graduation a week later on May 23rd at 7 PM. It will be held in the middle school gym with the stage, unless it is too hot and it will be in the grade school gym. 1 to 1 computer use in the grade and middle school was discussed, but no action was taken. Brink gave a time table to allow everyone to find out what the Board and committee have put together and allow for input. This would be sending out the information to the district staff today, have a faculty and staff meeting on Monday, post the information on the school’s website next Tuesday, as well as sending informational letters to parents talking about meetings held on February 6th and 18th. The Board would then make a decision to adopt, amend or reject the final committee recommendation on the 1 to 1 program at the February 27th meeting. This is to implement every student having a laptop computer that they use during the day and take home after school. We will have the details Tuesday morning. Principal Chuck Fairbanks reported on a very successful fundraiser with Dairy Queen earlier this week that brought in $411. The school will host the regional boys’ basketball tourney beginning next Thursday night. Volleyball tryouts have been going on this week. There will be a blood drive on Monday, February 3rd. Also, Team Qwest will begin next week.
