The Nashville Grade School Board of Education met last night for a short meeting. They approved the Risk Management Plan for Fiscal Year 2015 and it will relate to spending Tort Funds, similar to last year. They also approved the Kindergarten and Junior Hornet Handbooks with no real changes. The Activities Calendar is also ready for the entire school year. Last week at the Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education, they approved of letting DeeAnn Redfaeirn teach Fine Arts at Nashville Grade School, but still be contractually with HGS. The NGS Board approved of Redfaeirn teaching at Nashville, but Hoyleton will be reimbursed monthly for her to be at Nashville. Again, this is somewhat in anticipation of a consolidation of Hoyleton students into Nashville. If it happens, Redfaeirn will already be at NGS, but if it doesn’t happen, she will still have a job at Hoyleton. Emily Kellerman was a personal care aid for NGS and was going to teach Social Studies, as well as be the Right To Intervention para-professional this coming school year, but got a full-time position at Carlyle, so she tendered her resignation and the Board accepted it. This means they will need to hire her replacement, so the Board will allow Superintendent Mike Brink and Principal Chuck Fairbanks to do the interviewing and hire someone, while the Board will make it official at the August Board meeting. The Board also approved of three part-time receptionists for this school year. That includes Amanda Jack, Angela Donato and Liz Pender. The school got a donation of $1,300 in memory of Doyle Cohlmeier, as he had been a member of the Grade School Board of Education for 30 years. It was designated for the library. Brink updated the Board on the 1 to 1 computer conversion process. QNS has imaged all the computers, they are running speed tests and they are ready to go. The offline textbooks are being loaded on the servers as well and they will then be loaded onto the computers. They are working on a couple of issues to make the laptops work better for the students. This includes getting them into a sleep mode to maintain the battery life throughout the day and making it so the student doesn’t have to log in every time they shut the laptop lid closed to carry to the next classroom. Brink thinks this will all be done before school starts. The nice covers for the laptops came in and this was possible in part through the PSO’s donation this previous school year. There will be an open house on Tuesday, August 12th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, the evening before school starts. Students and their parents are encouraged to visit. There will be some time spent on discussing the laptops with parents then. Brink anticipates students will be able to take the devices home by the end of the 1st week of school.
