The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has refuted claims by an assemblyman of an impending water tariff hike in Johor. Its communications director Carol Pelly said there were no such plan at all. “To implement an increase in water tariffs for the state, Syarikat Air Johor Holding (SAJ) Sdn Bhd would have to submit an application to us and there will be public consultation. “Following that, there will be further reviews done and we will eventually submit a recommendation to the minister concerned, who will then have to table the matter in Parliament,” she said. On Monday, Bukit Batu assemblyman Jimmy Puah Wee Tse held a press conference on the matter, saying that he had learnt from a source that SAJ had submitted an application to SPAN to raise the state’s water tariff. Puah claimed that SAJ was awaiting a reply from SPAN. He said Johoreans were already paying the highest water tariff for both domestic and industrial usage in the country and it would be a major concern if price of water went up more. Puah urged Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to clear the air. “With the increase in petrol prices and the general cost of living, it will be very difficult for Johoreans to sustain their livelihood if they are forced to fork out additional money for water,” he said.
