The National Weather Service, Anchorage, has issued a special weather statement for much of the region, including the Mat-Su, calling for colder temperatures as cold arctic air is expected to sweep through by Saturday. The alert, issued at 6 p.m. today, calls for a blast of frigid air to blow in west from the Bering Sea, where it will meet warmer, wet air over Southcentral Alaska overnight Friday. Snow is expected to develop over popular hiking and recreation areas on all regional mountain rains, and hillsides could see a mix of rain and snow. On Saturday, snow levels are expected to drop to 2,000 feet. Area residents are advised to protect their gardens, and those planning to be outdoors should prepare for cold weather and pack accordingly, to include packing extra dry clothing. In addition, gale warnings will be in effect in coastal areas tonight and Friday for high winds and heavy seas.
