The National Weather Service of Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southern McDowell County in western North Carolina until 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. National Weather Service doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter size hail with winds in excess of 60 mph. The storm was spotted near Old Fort, or 10 miles outside of Marion, and is moving southeast at 5 mph. It is expected to affect parts of southern McDowell County, including the Sugar Hill area. Folks are encouraged to report damaging winds, hail or flooding to the National Weather Service by calling 1-800-267-8101 or by posting on their facebook page.
