The New Band Chanters are here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Colin Kyo Chanter, made by Mr. Murray Huggins For those who havent tried one, or heard about one... the Kyo has a shorter finger spacing on the bottom hand. The Holes are also smaller than normal, which makes it the exact opposite of a Prescription Holed Monster. Your Birl finger will not fall into the LA Hole. Your Bottom Hand fingering might improve noticeably. For having such small holes, the projection, and grass flattening (volume) is quite good. As for Birls... Well the smaller hole, and shorter spacing may help that. Making it more possible to nail Pt 4 and alt. pt 5 of Crossing the Minch, OR that other D. MacLeod Chune with all the Birls, his finger exercise Reel Arrangement of the Brokeded Banjo Murray is perhaps the first maker to drill the Low G Hole in the right bloody place. The High G is also well placed, needing only a sliver of tape, which often gets lifted once the chanter reed warms up, and otherwise achieves optimum moisture. The F is also quite good, if not perfect. As some know, I often do my pressure variance drone tuning Bob Mason Style, stylishly and subtly holding an F, instead of screeching a High A. Overall, they need a lot less tape than might be the case, and can be played nearly bald and be in tune, which is a rarer situation than some like to believe. But that is not going to stop the Bands Tonemiester from applying dreadful and horrid Gaffers Tape if it is needed, and when. The Piob High G is also quite good, and as with any good chanter, if you dont play one of those once in a while... you are not getting your moneys worth. The smaller holes, also make it more possible to play C and F Naturals. Faulse Fingerings. As I understand it, the Maker & Kyo Chanters least favorite Tune is Pumkins Fancy .... Ahem.. Lilli Clark This is not to say you cant, or shouldnt. Just so you know in advance, the Chanter doesnt like that one.. For the record... I still like different flavors once in a while, including the Dremmeled out, prescription sized Holes on certain of the Old Shepherds.
