The New Black marked the final recordings for the Strapping Young Lad project. The album apparently suffered from strict deadlines set by Century and mixed interest from Townsend himself. But regardless, it brought the endlessly crushing sound of SYL and injected the tongue-in-cheek humour into it that had somewhat disappeared over the previous releases. Its also somewhat overlooked, in my eyes, many of these tracks are amongst the best the group had ever come up with, it just never had the same sticking power as City or Alien.
